Haute Couture Swarovski embroidered bracelets are gaining a lot of attention since being featured in an article in The Hamilton Spectator, Style section this past Wednesday. The owner of Glimpse Creations, Sarah Cownley was featured with her jewelry in a full page article showing various pieces from her studio in Paris, France, including the cuff bracelets. These sparkling bracelets would be a perfect fit for your boutique this coming Christmas season. There is a large customer base of Glimpse Creations in the Burlington area that is looking for a place to buy her designs, rather than online which she sells primarily at the present time.

Sarah has created this line of Haute Couture bracelets after moving to Paris and spending months in an atelier, Lesage which is owned by Chanel. There, she learned the art of haute couture embroidery. Each bracelet is hand embroidered using the Luneville technique she was taught at Lesage. Couture embroidery is seen all over the Parisian runways and she has translated what is usually seen on gowns for designers such as Chanel, Valentino and Dior and created beautiful, wearable jewelry.

Sarah is able to create cuff bracelets to fit your customers needs. They are available in a variety of crystal colors which you would be able to custom order for your boutique. The bracelets are hand embroidered, with sparkling Swarovski crystals, glass beads, ribbons, sequins, metallic threads and vintage treasures. All bracelets are hand sewn on to vintage Parisian silk, backed with ultra suede and finished with a silk organza ribbon. Each bracelet measures approx. 1.5" wide and 6.5” long with an extra 9” of ribbon for tying together on each side.

Sarah is so creative we couldn't help but get a "Glimpse" ourselves....okay maybe more then a Glimpse...we wanted Sarah's creations for ourselves so we are now displaying her lovely line for purchase at Baden!!

The "Half Moon" Manicure

The Half Moon Manicure was brought to our attention when one of our great guests Amanda Hay came in for Shellac and requested a Half Moon Manicure.

The "Half Moon" Manicure is a very retro look. Dating back to the 20’s & 30’s women used to wear polish only in the center of their nails leaving the tip and half moon portions exposed. A women would have been considered extreme had she worn polish on her full nail as we do now.

Your Child and Head Lice

Well it's that time of year again when all of our little munchkin's are off to school and of course the rise of Head lice is back in full action!

Here are a few tips to help you beat the head lice itch!

What is Head Lice anyway?

Lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp, where they lay their eggs and feed off blood in the skin. The eggs, called nits, which are whitish grey, tan or yellow ovals, approximately the size of a grain of sand. They can look like dandruff. Adult lice can be the size of a sesame seed and are hard to see. Head lice doesn't mean that you're unclean. Lice actually prefers clean loose hair.

How does lice spread?

Head lice can spread through direct hair to hair contact or by sharing things like hats, hairbrushes and headphones. Lice does not fly or hop however they do crawl very quickly.

How do you know if your child has lice?
The most common sign that your child has lice is if they have an itchy head or neck. head lice however can also have no symptoms.

How do you treat head lice?

The most common treatment is an over the counter insecticide in the form of a cream, lotion or shampoo. Make sure to follow all instructions carefully. Combine this with manual nit removal with a fine comb.

What should you clean in your home?
Lice has a very short life spa away from the scalp, there is no need to disinfect your entire home. Make sure to was bed linens, pillow cases, towels, hats and clothing in hot water at least 50 degrees Celsius and dry them in a hot drier for at least 20minutes. Remember to include stuffed animals or toys that have a clothing component.

Three Experts Rebut Claims that UV Nail Lamps are Unsafe for Skin

Introduction
A recent report incorrectly claimed that UV nail lamps are a source of "high-dose UV-A" and also inaccurately compared UV tanning beds with UV nail lamps. The report, "Occurrence of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers on the Hands After UV Nail Light Exposure" (MacFarlane and Alonso) 1 , overestimated the exposure of client skin to UV light emitted from UV nail lamps and improperly characterized the effect of these lamps on the hand.
As three of the leading scientists in the professional nail industry, we were surprised by these claims. To verify the facts, using an independent laboratory we tested the leading UV nail lamps to determine how much UV-A and UV-B they emit and then compared that to natural sunlight.

Testing
In preparation for our study, we tested many UV nail lamps to determine which had the highest UV output and, as expected, found the nail lamp with the highest output was one designed to utilize four 9-watt UV bulbs. We also decided to test a popular UV nail lamp designed to utilize two 9-watt UV bulbs. The purpose for testing both lamps was to determine how exposures vary across the range of UV nail lamps with the goal of providing information that would apply to the majority of salons and situations. The selected two bulb UV nail lamp was chosen and tested because it is a popular brand and representative of other UV nail lamps within the two 9-watt UV bulb category. The selected four 9-watt UV bulb nail lamp was chosen because it had the highest measured UV output of any UV nail lamp tested. No attempt was made to test UV nail lamps utilizing only one UV bulb, since the overwhelming majority of UV nail lamps use two, three or four UV bulbs. The UV nail lamps selected for testing are likely representative of more than 90% of the UV nail lamps used in salons.

UV Nail Lamps Safe for Skin? Daily Light Exposure Bigger Risk than Manicures

June 3, 2010 – From commanding a steering wheel in the car to working in a cubicle under fluorescent lights, hands get more UV exposure from natural and artificial light than any other part of the body. Claims based on a study of two women have recently surfaced that UV nail lamps can put users at risk for skin cancer. According to extensive research by nail industry leader CND, UV light sources such as the ones used for curing nail products are safer than 8 hours in traditional office lighting. “The amount of energy from a UV lamp during a nail service would be roughly equivalent to the amount of UV exposure one would experience during a typical full day of exposure in indoor fluorescent lighting,” explains Dr. David Valia, Director of Research and Development for CND.

UV light sources such as the ones used for curing nail products emit UV energy at a very low level. Nail lamps emit a UV light at a very narrow section of the UVA region, while both indoor lighting and sunlight emit UV light across a much broader spectrum including UVA, UVB, and UVC. With tanning beds, the exposure is much higher due to a greater UV intensity, greater amount of energy transmitted by bulbs, longer exposure time and closer proximity of the user to the source.

Considering the minimal exposure of minutes drying nail color under a UV lamp versus the percentage of time spent unprotected in the sun or the office, the anxieties of getting skin damage from a manicure are disproportionate to the truth. How often does one reapply sunscreen after washing their hands? Seldom does anyone put on sunscreen when driving, or wear gloves when in the sun, but many wear hats, SPF-protective clothing and sunscreen.

Earlier this summer, Baden had purchased some beautiful plants to make our cute neighborhood Salon Spa have some nice curb appeal.

Unfortunately, late one evening, some kids walking by had a bit of fun with these lovely plants, and that of our other business neighbor's plants.

To say the least our plants survived, but the sidewalk area was a bit of a mess.

Gracie, one of our dear guests and neighbour was kind enough to put our flowers back in their original place.... but the dirt was everywhere.

That's how we met our new guests and neighbor's April and Ryan and their cutie patootie son Nathan!

Here is April, on a stroll with their dog when Nathan (age 3) decided he wanted to help clean up the dirt from our sidewalk.

So with the help of Dad (Ryan) they got right to work...tidying up the hood one dustpan at a time!

This is the cutest thing we have ever seen! To think community service can start so young!! What great values to teach a child at such a young age!

And just like that... we had a nice clean sidewalk again!!

Kristy and her Locks of Love...

Meet our Dear Guest Kristy.....

Kristy is one of those "full of heart" kinda people who likes to do well for others. She has been our client since her brother Jeff introduced us to each other over a year ago now. As you can tell in this picture above, our girl Kristy has some really LONG hair....

Yuppers....long!

Kristy has the capability to grow her hair like crazy, and with such a gift she is kind enough to help others less fortunate then her.... Have you heard of "Locks of Love"?

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses they provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

AKA "Driz" who has talent beyond belief with the "Carmel" on the Macchiatos..) ANYWAY...back to the whole reason for this blog.... Ms.Lisa Clarke and Ash Duce.... who ARE FABO!

How would you describe Jade??- Funny. Pretty, Full of life, All around Canadian girl and Organized!!!

The Present...

It has been a little over a year and a half since I left my position as the Spa Director at the Granite Club in Toronto. Since then my whole world has changed ....and WOW what a ride!

Although it has been a bit of a roller coaster of emotions and events, I have spent a lot of my time as we build Baden Salon Spa Inc. to reflect on where we are, where we've been, and where we are headed.

I had recently read a fantastic book called the "Present" by Spencer Johnson, one of my very favorite Author's.

The crux of the book is how to live in the present while learning from the past and planning for the future to achieve happiness in work and personal life.

Now focusing on present doesn’t mean that you should forget the past. Everybody does some mistakes in the past but you shouldn’t keep worrying about it. You might keep thinking about those past mistakes in the present and may spoil the present. It is hard to let go of the past if you have not learned from the past.

Over this past week I have spent a lot of time, reflecting and worrying about those possible mistakes that are definitely spoiling the present moments that Baden and myself may be missing.

So the question was put forth:

"What have you learned in the past, so that you can let go and move on to the present and plan for the future?"

Interesting enough, there has been a number of people, places and things, that I have truly learned from in my past. Melanie was and still is one of those special people.

Meet my dear friend and former colleague Melanie.

Melanie and I spent countless efforts and time planning the future of the Salon and Spa at the Granite Club and in turn became truly dear friends and shopping buddies!

Melanie's talents are that of a "Fashionista" previously outfitting Granite Gear, Salon at the Granite and the members of the Granite Club.

Melanie has taught me a lot about the world of merchandising, and is truly why Baden Salon Spa has some big plans in the future!

Not only does Melanie have amazing merchandising talents, she has taught me quite a bit about

learning from the past, and how to respond to what is important about the present, past and future, and that it all has meaning.

Mel had a visit with me a few weeks ago and brought us this beautiful flower for Baden and to congratulate us on all our "Present" accomplishments and to truly recognize where we/I are today.

Orchids are regarded as a symbol of rare and delicate beauty. Well this is how we feel about Mel.

Thank you Mel for reminding us that we learn and grow, just like this Orchid. To stay present and focused on our dreams, and that a friendship like yours is a rare and delicate beauty!

Okay and maybe we went a little crazy and added some funky nail enhancements

Mommy Monday's for our Baden Babies

Although I am not yet blessed with a little munchkin of my own, many of my girlfriends and their hubbies have little bundles of joy.

With all the little ones around, my BFF's are finding it hard to find baby friendly atmosphere's for baby and mom to relax and enjoy some quality time together outside the house.

With that in mind, at Baden we have created a "Baden Baby Day"

Each and every Monday Baden Salon Spa is happy to become "Mom and Baby" friendly so that as a new mom you can feel comfortable and still enjoy all the salon spa services you once did before your baby arrived.

Here is a few of our regular guests (and friends) that take advantage of our baby friendly surroundings

He is such a happy little munchkin...although dad is very against future toe polish painting! (I have a feeling Kaleb will be rock climbing long before he walks!)

This is baby Alexa...Mama Brianna and her come quite often and have pedicures. I don't think Alexa has ever shed a tear...must be loving the spa already! Look out Mama!

I felt that this post needed a great quote for a great person.
This blog post is long overdue and I am proud to introduce you to a truly unique individual.
A person that since our very first conversation on the phone was pleasant, persistent, and unique.

Meet Tonya

Tonya is our Designer at Baden, but really she is the "everything girl"!

If you have had the pleasure of meeting Tonya, then you know exactly what I speak of.

Since our very first meeting (which she will happily tell you I hired her before we even met....and then called her back and felt that I should maybe be a little more professsional and actually have a proper interview with her...) ....where was I ...oh yes...our very first meeting over a glass of vino at East Side Mario's.

Tonya and I hit it off right away....and have been partners in crime on the misson to build the business of Baden ever since!

However...there is a few things that Tonya speaks often about that are some of her most proud accomplishments and I feel that I must share them with you as they are what makes her so fabulous.....

By far this is why Tonya is an amazing women! A single mom who constantly makes these boys her priority and is always working hard at Baden to create a better life for them (....the Christmas gifts that they are receiving has been a topic of conversation for weeks now!)

This is Tonya's "pimp" mobile! Yuppers...she absolutely loves this car! And rightfully so...she has worked very hard for this one!

As you can see although she is a fabulous hair designer, she is a fantastic mom who works hard to create a good life for her kiddies!

Now....I must also speak of ....the "Head, Neck and Shoulder" massage she provides each of our guests when they have the pleasure of sitting in her chair....

you kinda feel like this when she's done........

Okay ...so maybe I exaggerate a little...but it feels pretty darn good!

All in all...Tonya is

It is always fun when my family comes to visit the Salon Spa. It's even more fun when my nephews come to visit!

I have trained my nephews from the day they were born to call me "Auntie Beautiful" and do you believe it stuck? It is always nice to be referred to this name in public!

This was the first time the boys had been out to see the Salon Spa completed. They had no idea, of course at ages four (Braydon on the left) and 3 (Brent on the right) what the heck "Auntie Beautiful" does here at the Salon Spa or even better what a "Pedicure" is!

As you can imagine my brother was just "thrilled" that his son's were dying to get a pedicure

It's 1am and I was doing a little "Fall Cleaning" and came across a CD that contained pictures from the first real time I was away from home. I was offered a job at Seventeen Studio Spa Salon in Dallas Texas in 2003... boy that was a long time ago...but finding this CD brings back all the good memories that I have and Friends that were my support and family while I was away from mine!

This is Cindy & John....

It was so AMAZING to find this Cd that Cindy made for me so I wouldn't forget the good times I had while in Dallas.

Cindy is just about the most amazing person I had ever met. I was so terribly home sick ...geez ... it was crazy and becoming a REAL Spa Director for the first time was also a pretty crazy time.

Cindy was my first friend and the one that stood by me the most on this adventure!

John, well he was pretty great too.... He totally let me steal Cindy just about every night I swear for like

6 months!

Cindy used to drive me around everywhere in her new VW beetle... boy did we have some fun times... take a look.......

Yup...twister on my very first American thanksgiving! She knew how to do it up that's for sure!

I had green bean casserole for the very first time that year!

Cindy always made me feel loved... I can tell you I loved her ..saying goodbye to her was so hard....BUT she is doing amazing and still looking Fabulous!

This is Amanda... the inventory Queen! Amanda is such a fun girl! We had some great laughs as we went crazy in the back room with all that inventory! HOLY!

Amanda took over my apartment when I had to head back to Canada! Look at this layout... I love this apartment... check out the website sometime...it was so amazing to live there!

Ahhh Austin Ranch... I had a red couch ... I LOVED IT! Austin Ranch was like Melrose Place..... SO FUN! Nothing like it hear in Toronto that's for sure!

This is Miriam and Tiffany... They are just about the best Salon Spa Cheerleaders I have ever met!

They nicknamed me "Canada" it was so great!

And I sure can't forget about Miss Mae!

Heather is crazy fun! We had some great times! Heather took me to see Pieces of April at a film festival... she was super great! I love her! I still wear the bracelet with my cowboy boot on it every now and again... it reminds me of some great times! She gave me her old mattress so I had something to sleep on when I moved to Austin Ranch! I still have the pillow case too sister! LOL

And this was Angelica... she was so sweet ...cute as a button! I just realized... I have blue contacts in my eyes! HA HA... now that is funny & a little freaky what was I thinking! LOL

I wish I had a picture of my girl Keisha... Miss Ebony! When I find one I will post it! she was my right hand at Seventeen ... I love you too girl!

To say the least Dallas was an amazing adventure, and allowed me to meet people that helped mold me into the person I am today. Thank you Cindy & John for being my surrogate family, and Amanda for being such a great support, Heather, Tiffany, Angelica and Miriam for good times, And Keisha for always making me laugh!

I miss you all and hope you are well! Baden Salon Spa Inc. would be a POWERHOUSE with you guys here! xo

21st Annual Contessa's

On Sunday November 1st Tonya(our super rad hair designer) and myself had the pleasure of attending the Contessa 2010 Canadian Hairstylist of the year awards. YES...it is true...we are proud to say that our industry recognizes the best of the best technical skill and creativity in hair, makeup and nails, interior salon and spa design, business practices and community service initiatives.

It has been an amazing journey opening up Baden Salon Spa. Collega AVEDA has been a tremendous support! George Civello, Joseph Coruso, and Glen Ritchie were also at the table with us but some how they escaped our "mini" photo shoot!

This is Cindy and I ...we go way back to the days at the Granite Club. Cindy is more then just Collega's Retail Sales Manager...she is an amazing friend and confidant!

Here is Tonya and I ...we were super close to the stage and all the action. I think Tonya had a great time! She was seat number "8" ... and her son was very proud of her! (Jordan... Tonya's son was super excited when she arrived home...he was greeted with a large jar of gum balls which was the center piece at our table!)

Memorable Mondays

October 26th 2009 started off like any other day. It was a slower Monday for us at the shop, got lot's of paper work done and I was REALLY looking forward to a visit from my dear friends Nick, Lizzie and the latest edition... Porter!

I had become friends with Nick and Liz when I was working at the Granite Club. Nick(crazy Auzzie) is the Member Services Manager at the Club, and he would always check in on me when I would work all those long hours! Lizzie(who totally puts up with the crazy Auzzie..LOL) worked in the Playschool. Liz and I had met when Liz and Nick first started dating a few years later.

Interesting enough they then became my neighbors when I lived with Lousia on Aerodrome Cres. in T.O. Lizzie and I would spend..oh...I would say every spare minute we had drinking wine and watching all the latest T.V shows.

When I found out that they were expecting I was over the top excited!

Nine (okay... more like ten) months later Porter arrived and so did the opening of Baden Salon Spa! (Porter came a little sooner!)

Yesterday was Porter's very first visit to a Salon Spa

Is he not the cutest kid you have EVER SEEN! (I think so too!)

Later that evening at Milstones, Lizzie and Nick surprised me with a very special gift!

At first I thought when they said "We have something to tell you" I was sure they were leaving for Australia never to return..BUT then... they said...

"We would like for you to be Porter's GODMOTHER"

I was so excited I couldn't believe it! (Then I thought..."What would Porter think?")

He was as excited as I was! Yippee!

It is amazing how the world works... just a simple slow Monday

I love this time of year... a beautiful fall day and a planned visit to our new spa from some very near and dear old friends!

This friend is a special one.....we go way back...when Baden Salon Spa was just a glimmer in my eye!

Meet my friend Mel..............

You see, Mel and I attended "The Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy" together right out of high school. We also both dropped out of massage school!

HOWEVER, Mel went on to do a fabulous jewelry program and I was off to beauty school.

Mel and I have had some crazy adventures together and had a blast doing so.

While Mel was in jewelry school...she had the pleasure(okay that might be a stretch ..HA Ha Love you!) of meeting Pete...

Today I also had the pleasure of having two little visitors to Baden.

It was a private session that included some nerds, m&m peanuts and the movie Monsters Inc.

Kamilla (purple shirt) has already told mom that she will be working at the Spa when she grows up!

Our Inventory Comic Relief.... Nicky Pickles

It's amazing what can happen when family gets together to build a Salon Spa. When I say amazing I mean what can happen when your dear cousin fly's in from Vancouver!

Nicky Pickles and I have had many an amazing adventure, like in the above pic... this is us having dinner Christmas day in Costa Rica! What a blast we had on that trip!

To be honest Nicky is more like my sister than my cousin. She's an only child ..so I adopted her as a sister! Normally Nicky is pretty well put together...HOWEVER...she has a small, tiny, itty bitty...

Deliciously Simple...

There I was in the middle of a crazy renovation, just days before opening and my aunt says to me;

"Cath, the family wants to get you a gift for your opening...but flowers die so fast??"

It was hard for me to think on my feet at the moment and didn't know what I needed

but then....

My Aunt Cathy is an extreme shopper and to say the least always digs up some incredible finds. SO in traditional "Auntie Cathy" style( with a little feedback from mom) she cam across this fabulous little invention just perfect for my new Salon & Spa .........

Your all probably thinking...What is it? I did too.

Well... this would be the most deliciously simple SINGLE CUP COFFEE maker ever made!

It's name is the "Keurig" and we love it here at Baden!

Our guests get to enjoy not only our Signature Aveda Tea through this little wonder ( it allows for loose leaf tea ..WOOT!) but also an array of coffee ..Timothy's, Emeril's, Van Houtte AND Twinings tea!

Again the family pulls through with yet another great gift for our success!
